SENECA CO., N.Y. — Seneca County had 6 youth participate in learning more about horses in early 2017. The youth met each Tuesday evening from January through March. The dedicated 4-H members also studied at home. They learned about the science of horses. This included anything from anatomy to zoonotic diseases.
Under the guidance of coaches Fran Ferrara and Joan Hendrix, they attended the Region 2 4-H Horse Extravaganza event. They entered in two contests at the event, horse bowl and hippology.
Four of the youth formed the novice team that reprented Seneca County. They started the day with Hippology during which they were quizzed at a variety of stations. The youth judged horses, identified tack, named different breeds of horses, completed a written exam and more. Their team placed 4th and all placed in the Top 20 Individuals. Annabelle Tingue placed 6th, Megan Keery came in 9th, Emily Hoster was 11th, and Minda Manns finished 20th. Senior participant, Louisa Hoster, was on a team with 4-Hers from Cayuga and Yates Counties. She placed 15th individually and qualified for the New York State Hippology Contest which is held at the NYS Fair.
The horse bowl contest is a quiz bowl event with questions all about horses with kids buzzing in to answer. The Seneca novice team placed 4th with Annabelle Tingue 6th place individual, Emily Hoster 8th place individual, and Minda Manns 16th place individual. The combined Senior Team from Cayuga, Yates, and Seneca Counties also placed fourth with Louisa Hoster placing 15thindividually.
The Horse Extravaganza event for nearly 100 Finger Lakes area youth can not take place without volunteers. Zach Tingue was a coach’s helper at the event. Nicole Ferrara worked diligently in the score room. Katie Keery and Michelle Margeit were team escorts for the Hippology Contest.
