GENEVA, N.Y. — Happy spring! It is that time of year again, and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Seneca County recently held the 2019 Outdoor Education Field Day. On May 15th, 150 sixth graders from Romulus Central School, South Seneca High School, and Mynderse Academy gathered at Sampson State Park on Seneca Lake. These students had the opportunity to attend a variety of hands-on outdoor education workshops.

(Courtesy Photo)For over half a century, Outdoor Education Field Day has been offered as a dedication to outdoor education, natural resource conservation, and having fun outside! 4-H Youth Development Educator, Nate Kennedy said, “The event was a prime example of collaboration and communication regarding conservation and outdoor education, and it demonstrated the level of care that community members have for sharing their knowledge with the next generation.” Throughout the course of the event, students interacted with an incredible group of outdoor education specialists, whose workshops covered topics such as New York Black Bears, Citizen Science, Recycling, Invasive Species, and more.
Workshop presenters included NYS Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation; NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), U.S. Forest Service; Quality Deer Management Association; Finger Lakes Institute; Montezuma Audubon Center; Cornell Cooperative Extension of Seneca County Agriculture, 4-H Youth Development, and Seneca GR&EEN (Generating Recycling and Energy Education Now); Ontario County Soil & Water Conservation District; Cayuga Nature Center; and Wayne County Gem & Mineral Club.
