BELMONT, N.Y. — Cornell Cooperative Extension is excited to announce: Seed Germination Clinic.
Are my seed from past years’ worth planting? Join Master Gardeners at East Wind Landscape Nursery located at 5614 State Route 19 Belmont, NY on Saturday, April 30th from 10-Noon for some tips and tricks on determining seed viability and getting plantings off to a good start.
Did you know that with simple procedures at home you can know the viability of your seeds (old and new ones)? A germination test uses a small sample of your seeds to check how viable the rest are. This simple test, sprouting seeds before planting, shows how many of them germinate. It doesn’t really matter how old the seeds are, some of the seeds can be viable for years, a germination test gives a measurement of seed viability to help you adjust seeding rate for a successful yield.
Master Gardeners will have some examples of germination tests on hand to show and will be able to answer your questions about starting seeds.
