JEFFERSON CITY — Former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue was confirmed as the United States Secretary of Agriculture by the Senate on Monday, April 24. In his first post-confirmation appearance outside of Washington, D.C., Secretary Perdue visited Kansas City Thursday and Friday. Perdue spent time at the USDA Service Center in Kansas City, and spoke at an ag town hall at the American Royal Complex hosted by the Agricultural Business Council of Kansas City. Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn and Deputy Director Garrett Hawkins were in attendance.
Sonny Perdue, the 31st U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, came by his knowledge of agriculture the old fashioned way: he was born into a farming family in Bonaire, Georgia. From childhood, and through his life in business and elected office, Perdue has experienced the industry from every possible perspective. Under the guidance of Secretary Perdue, the USDA will be fact-based and data-driven, with a decision-making mindset that is customer-focused. As the former governor of Georgia, he is a strong believer in good government who will seek solutions to problems and not lament that the agency might be faced with difficult challenges.
