BROOKINGS, S.D. — The South Dakota State University Livestock Judging Team will host two youth livestock judging camps this summer June 8-10 and June 12-14.
Youth will have the opportunity to gain hands-on judging experience from members of SDSU’s award-winning livestock judging team and the SDSU Livestock Judging Team Coach Brady Jensen.
“The SDSU Livestock Judging Camp is geared for all experience levels, and we encourage all who have an interest in livestock judging to attend,” said Jensen. “This year’s coaches and counselors are outstanding at working with the youth and will serve as tremendous role models for those who attend. I’m confident that the 2022 SDSU Livestock Judging Camp is destined to be the best one to date.”
Attendees will have the option to attend either the first judging camp held June 8-10 or the second camp session from June 12-14. Throughout the camp, students will have the opportunity to judge multiple live classes of beef cattle, swine, goats and sheep in addition to using performance data and preparing oral reasons.
Registration is open to youth ages 11-18. Those interested must be 11 years old by January 1, 2022 to register. The cost is $250 per attendee and includes two nights of lodging in an SDSU residence hall, six meals, recreational activities, a judging manual and a camp t-shirt.
Registration will close May 20, 2022 and a $50 late fee will be applied to registrations submitted after the deadline.
“Not only do experienced youth take a lot away from this experience, but we also find that a lot of youth get their start in judging at our camp,” said Jensen. “We really enjoy watching the participants develop their talents and go on to successfully compete at other contests after attending camp.”
Past camp attendees from 2021 went on to become state champion youth livestock judgers in junior and senior divisions at five different state contests in South Dakota, Wyoming, Virginia, North Dakota and Colorado and the high individual at the National Western Stock Show.
Jensen and the members of the SDSU Livestock Judging Team bring notable success and experience to the camp, as they were recently named the Reserve National Champion Team at the North American International Livestock Exposition in 2021, and past team member Tyler Bush won the National Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest in 2020.
