RALEIGH — The Sanitary Transportation Act is one of the 7 rules of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). This rule is built on similar principles as the Sanitary Food Transportation Act of 2005 and establishes requirements for loaders, shippers, carriers (rail or motor vehicles), and receivers for both human and animal food. The first compliance date for the Sanitary Transportation Act was April 6, 2017, though FDA acknowledged documentation of compliance through training may be difficult without training materials being available, but encouraged shippers to work with carriers to ensure they were aware of the rule and any applicable provisions, and that food is transported in a safe and sanitary manner.
Training
As promised, the Food and Drug Administration has released an online training course that covers the Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food Rule. The training course takes approximately one hour and is free of charge. At the end of the course, a certificate is generated as proof of completion. You may access the course from the FDA Sanitary Transportation Training Course page.
