BOONE, Iowa — Communities need young leaders for today and the future. Adults from across the state who work with middle school-aged youth in schools or out-of-school time youth programs are invited to attend a youth leadership facilitators training May 22 and 23, 2019.
This facilitator training focuses on “Ricochet” an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach research-based leadership curriculum designed for middle school-age youth. The training provides the curriculum, explanation and hands-on experiential learning of five components of leadership development: leadership information, leadership attitudes, and communication, decision-making, and stress management skills. Tools to help market the program, celebrate successes and recruit volunteers are included.
Ricochet has three levels that building on each other: Ricochet 1: An Extreme Leadership Adventure, Ricochet 2: The Adventure Continues, and Ricochet 3: The Final Adventure. Each level engages youth in 13 hours of education on the five dimensions of leadership through a unique series of interactive challenge-based activities for that level. Youth use their Ricochet experience to better their community be identifying, planning, and implementing a service learning project. The objectives of Ricochet are based on the work of Fertman’s & Van Linden’s “Youth Leadership: A Guide to Understanding Leadership Development in Adolescents.” Outcomes support Iowa Core 21st Century employability skills including communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and leadership development.
The Ricochet facilitator training is scheduled for May 22 and May 23, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. each day and will be held at the Boone County Iowa State University Extension and Outreach office at 1327 SE Marshall Street, Boone, Iowa. The training cost for each day is $30. The curriculum is $25. Day 1 will provide an overview of the Ricochet foundation and Level 1 activities. Day 2 will cover Ricochet levels 2 and 3.
