LINCOLN — Governor Pete Ricketts released the fifth episode of “The Nebraska Way” featuring former Husker football coach Tom Osborne. In their conversation, they talk about Coach Osborne’s early years in sports, coaching the Huskers, marijuana, TeamMates, and his venture into public service.
Tom Osborne was born in Hastings, Nebraska where he was a star athlete in high school, playing football, basketball, and track. He went to Hastings College where he played quarterback for the football team. He had a brief NFL career before joining Husker football coach Bob Devaney as an assistant and succeeding him as head coach in 1973. Outside of football, Osborne served three terms in the House of Representatives, representing Nebraska’s third district. With the help of his wife Nancy, Osborne also began the TeamMates Mentoring Program where student-athletes volunteer as mentors to middle school youth. The program currently serves more than 160 school districts across 5 states, and Osborne still serves on the board of directors.
