GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Revolution Farms, one of the largest indoor aquaponics farms in the United States, announced it harvested its first crop of ultra-fresh lettuce for retail sale. The salad mixes, sold under the Revolution Farms brand, launched in 16 SpartanNash stores across Michigan this week, including Forest Hills Foods, 11 D&W Fresh Market locations and select VG’s and Family Fare stores. Revolution Farms is built on a mission to disrupt the fresh produce industry by growing and harvesting hyper-local salad greens for consumers year-round, using advanced indoor farming methods.
“Unlike any other farm, Revolution Farms can grow fresher and more sustainable, lettuce and greens for the millions of people who want to eat healthier,” said Tripp Frey, Revolution Farms founder and CEO. “We see significant opportunity to change what people eat and the way our industry farms, because our team has created game-changing innovation and technological advancements to produce a distinct alternative to the salad mixes people buy today. We are positioned to change consumer expectations of how a salad should taste.”
Revolution Farms’ 85,000 sq.ft facility, located on 76th St in Caledonia, has capacity to produce more than 350,000 pounds of fresh salads for Michigan and the Midwest region every year. The lettuce will go from farm to store in one or two days, less than half the time it takes for lettuce grown on the West Coast to make it to Michigan store shelves. Because local greens are fresher than lettuce coming from out of state, Revolution Farms’ salad mixes have shown a longer shelf life in stores and at home, as well as more nutrients.
“At SpartanNash, we have a commitment to building local relationships, both with our store guests and with local growers and producers,” said Larry Pierce, SpartanNash Executive Vice President, Merchandising and Marketing. “At each of our stores, we provide selection, quality and freshness, and as the exclusive supplier of Revolution Farms’ Beautiful Bibb, Garden Greens and Romaine salad mixes, we are excited to offer our store guests fresh, innovative, sustainable solutions for their dinner tables.”
The packaged and prepared salad industry has a market value of more than $12 billion, and is growing quickly, with an expected value of $21 billion by 2025. By always harvesting at its peak of growth, and packaging on-site, Revolution Farms can distribute packaged organic lettuce to SpartanNash stores in a matter of one or two days, which should appeal to consumers’ appetites for fresh, healthy lettuce.
Revolution Farms lettuce is now available at 16 SpartanNash stores across Michigan – including Forest Hills Foods, all D&W Fresh Market locations and select VG’s and Family Fare stores – with the plan to expand to more SpartanNash stores throughout the state in the coming weeks.
