UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The deadline for registering for the first Penn State Extension Dairy Team workshop in Huntingdon on transition cow management is Friday.
Workshops will be held Jan. 16 at Hoss’s Steak House, 9016 William Penn Highway, Huntingdon, and Jan. 23 at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Deadline for the Lancaster workshop is Jan. 19.
The workshops are focused on the transition period, one of the most critical and challenging times in the life of a cow. They both offer hands-on experience for participants.
Both sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and registration fee is $30 which includes lunch and materials. Registration can be done online at https://extension.psu.edu/transition-cow-management. Producers are encouraged to bring their own samples (milk and urine) to be analyzed during the workshops.
Two new Extension Veterinarians and Research Associates, Drs. Hayley Springer and Adrian Barragan, will be featured in these meetings.
“We are very glad to have these two excellent professionals in our team,” said Mauricio Rosales, Extension Dairy Educator. “They bring a different perspective in addition to broad experience in the dairy industry.”
Two well-known PSU educators also will be part of these meetings: Dr. Robert Van Saun, Extension Veterinarian and Professor in the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences; and, Virginia Ishler, Extension Specialist in the Department of Animal Science. They will discuss feed management and the metabolic profile during the transition time.
