FRANKFORT — Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles invites Kentucky students to express in art and writing how Kentucky’s agriculture community is working to address hunger in the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s (KDA) annual Poster and Essay Contest.
“It’s an unfortunate reality that one in six Kentuckians – including one in five children – don’t always know where their next meal will come from,” Commissioner Quarles said. “That’s why I launched the Hunger Initiative in 2016 – to bring people together from various fields to look for solutions to the hunger problem. Our farmers and agricultural businesses are at the forefront of this fight, and I hope every Kentucky student will submit an entry to show how farmers are helping feed the hungry in Kentucky and around the world.”
Students in grades K-12 may submit a poster, an essay, or a digital artwork based on the theme “Kentucky Farms: Growing Solutions for a Growing World.” Entries must be submitted to the KDA and postmarked by March 22.
Winners will be notified by April 16. Winners in the poster and essay competitions will be selected in each grade. One statewide winner will be selected for digital artwork. Each winner will receive a $100 award from Kentucky Agriculture and Environment in the Classroom (KyAEC) and will be recognized at the 2019 Poster and Essay Contest Awards Ceremony later in the year.
