WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — How do property taxes work in Indiana? This and other questions will be answered in a Purdue Extension workshop presented at the Vigo County Library, Meeting Room C, in Terre Haute, Ind., on April 25 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Local elected officials and community members will learn more about Indiana’s local government revenue system while exploring trends in Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties.
This five county region varies greatly from Vigo County with a population of over 100,000 with the other four counties predominately rural. Vigo County also stands out with an average tax rate of $3.22 per $100 assessed value, among the highest 10 percent in the state. This high average tax rate is due in part to a low net assessed value per capita. On the other end of the spectrum, Parke County has an average tax rate in the lowest 10 percent of Indiana counties. This local government finance workshop will include detailed reports for each of these counties. Participants will have the opportunity to take a look at how the property tax system functions in their region from appropriations all the way to example homeowner tax bills.
The workshop features Dr. Larry DeBoer, Purdue University, Department of Agricultural Economics; Tamara Ogle, Purdue Extension Community Development; Hans Schmitz, Purdue Extension-Posey County; and Amanda Mosiman, Purdue Extension Warrick County. The program is hosted by Purdue Extension Vigo County.
