State Clean Water Fund and federal Environmental Quality Incentives Program grants covered about 90 percent of the cost to build a manure storage facility and calf barn. Previously, the dairy had only a few days’ manure storage. In the winter, that sometimes meant repeatedly spreading on the flattest fields closest to the barn. The Dahl farm is part of a Root River Field to Stream Partnership, which will track what effect farmland conservation practices have on streams. (Courtesy of Minnesota Department of Agriculture)
