COLESBURG, Iowa — Progressive Agriculture Safety Day was held at Edgewood Colesburg Elementary School in Colesburg on Tuesday, May 4th with over 150 students, teachers, adult volunteers, and FFA members in attendance. Educational safety lessons were taught by the Ed-Co FFA students to youth in pre-kindergarten through 1st grade. ISU Extension and Outreach Delaware County along with Ed-Co FFA partnered together to provide the educational safety lessons.

At this year’s Progressive Agriculture Safety Day, FFA students instructed several safety stations relevant for all youth whether they live on a farm, visit a farm, and just basic safety information important for our youth. Stations included how to make calls to 911 and gave students a chance to role play through a simulated emergency call. They learned fire safety, and practiced their stop, drop and roll. A station on hidden hazards around the yard and farm, showed the dangers that can be around and discussed safe places for youth to play. Water safety demonstrated the importance of life jackets and talked about safety around different bodies of water. They also learned about seatbelts and buckling up in the car. FFA students also instructed safety stations on animal and tractor. This event is made possible each year through the generous support of our county’s commodity groups, Farm Credit Services of America, and many local businesses.

Progressive Ag is the largest rural safety and health education program for children in North America. ISU Extension and Outreach Delaware County partners annually with local FFA chapters to host the program throughout the county in an effort to provide education, training, and resources to make farm life safer and healthier for children and their communities.
