DELHI, Iowa —Progressive Agriculture Farm Safety Day was held at Maquoketa Valley High School on April 26th with over 150 students, teachers, adult volunteers, and FFA members in attendance. Educational safety lessons were taught to children from grades junior kindergarten through 1st grade. ISU Extension and Outreach Delaware County along with Maquoketa Valley FFA partnered together to provide the educational safety lessons.
At this year’s Progressive Agriculture Farm Safety Day, FFA students instructed a number of safety stations for the junior kindergarten to 1st graders in attendance. Stations included how to make calls to 911, and gave students a chance to role play through a simulated emergency call. They learned fire safety, and practiced their stop, drop and roll. A station featured grain safety and flowing grain, demonstrating the dangers of grain carts and grain bins.
Sun safety was taught at another station. They also learned about seatbelts and buckling up. FFA students also instructed safety stations on hazardous chemicals and tractor. The day concluded with a puppet show about animal safety around the farm. This event is made possible each year through the generous support of our county’s commodity groups, Farm Credit Services of America, and many local businesses.
The Progressive Agriculture Farm Safety Day program is celebrating 25 years of ag safety education. Progressive Ag is the largest rural safety and health education program for children in North America. ISU Extension and Outreach Delaware County partners annually with local FFA chapters to host the program throughout the county in an effort to provide education, training, and resources to make farm life safer and healthier for children and their communities.
