MANHATTAN, Kan. — In communities across Kansas, a new program is designed to grow families’ financial knowledge while enjoying the spring weather.
Using a program called Family Financial StoryWalk, children and families in 16 Kansas communities during the week of April 21-28 will be able to read and learn the basics about money management while going for a walk. Book pages are mounted on signs in participating communities, so families can stroll along and read children’s books that have a storyline related to money, spending and giving.
The program is sponsored by K-State Research and Extension and coincides with Money Smart Week, a week each spring dedicated to financial awareness and education, started by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
“Children learn from the adults in their lives,” said Elizabeth Kiss, family financial management specialist with K-State Research and Extension. “Through the Family Financial Management StoryWalk, families are encouraged to walk and read the books together and to start family conversations about money and money issues.”

More information about family finance education is available at K-State Research and Extension offices in every Kansas county.
