INDIANAPOLIS — Farm and ranch families make up just 2 percent of the U.S. population, and with people showing a greater interest in where their food comes from, now more than ever it’s important to tell the story of agriculture. Working towards this goal, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture launched the Indiana Agvocate program, a series of interactive workshops designed to help those in agriculture share their story more effectively.
“Every day, Hoosier farmers work hard to produce food, fuel and fiber products that are relied upon by people all over the world,” said Ted McKinney, ISDA Director. “As a vital industry in our state, we must continue to promote Indiana agriculture and inspire others to do so as well.”
Led by Kimmi Devaney, ISDA Agricultural Marketing and Industry Development Manager, each workshop will include information on outreach tools available today; how to use social media to maximize reach and consumer engagement; as well as, the importance of having an open dialogue with consumers, just to name a few. In addition to networking opportunities, attendees will also have the chance to develop a personalized outreach and communications plan.
To kick off the Indiana Agvocate program, three workshops will be held in Boone, Marshall and Orange counties. To register for one of the workshops, contact Kimmi Devaney at KDevaney@isda.in.gov or call 317-450-3570 at least three days prior to the event. There is no cost to attend.

“Agriculture shapes so much of our everyday lives, from the food we eat to the clothing we wear,” Devaney said. “My hope is that everyone who participates in this program feels encouraged and equipped to share the story of agriculture, which is truly an amazing story to tell.”
Devaney added that the program was well received among members of the industry and that several agricultural organizations have partnered with ISDA to host the workshops, including Indiana Farm Bureau, and county farm bureau organizations, Purdue Extension, Indiana Dairy Producers, Purdue University and others.
