UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Editor’s note: The following release has been updated with the correct date and website.
If you direct market farm products in their natural state, sell wholesale to restaurants and grocery stores, or make/sell value added products (such as apple butter made from locally grown fruit), you know that in recent years there has been an expanded emphasis on proactive food safety planning. However, itâs widely realized that the most complete food safety system will not completely eliminate all chance that a food borne illness might occur. Along with intentional food safety standards, it is important for all producers to have product liability insurance. In most cases, a traditional farm owner or business ownerâs policy will exclude product liability coverage, making it vital, in todayâs marketplace, to cover the needs of your customers, your defense costs in a lawsuit, and any subsequent judgments of the court, should a food borne incident occur that is traced back to the farm by securing a product liability policy.
Co-sponsored by the University of Scranton SBDC, the Penn State Center for Agricultural and Shale Law, and Horizon Farm Credit, this two-hour educational session is designed to provide information to producers who currently are, or may be contemplating, selling raw and processed agricultural products. It will also equip you to evaluate any insurance you have to ensure that you have adequate protection. By attending this meeting, you will learn the importance of having product liability insurance, the types of situations it will address, and how to go about getting the coverage that you need.
Preregistration is required for you to attend this event on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 (NOTE: the 2/15 session has been rescheduled to this date) from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. either at one of the following Horizon Farm Credit office locations* OR via webinar.
