CORTLAND CO., N.Y. — Cornell Cooperative Extension’s South Central NY Dairy & Field Crops Team offers an online meeting series starting February 9 and ending March 2. The program features practical management recommendations for enhancing soil health in field crop production.
The schedule with topics is as follows:
- Feb 9; Cover crops are accepted as benefit for soil health. Their control in the spring can be challenging. The selection of residual herbicides that will support their establishment during or after the growing season and herbicides that are best for their control in the spring will be reviewed by Dr. John Wallace, Weed Management Extension Specialist at Penn State and Mike Hunter, Regional Extension Field Crops Specialist with the North Country Ag Team.
- Feb 16; Warren Schneckenburger, whose farm is on the leading edge with the Innovative Farmers Association of Ontario, will share his experience managing soil compaction on his farm and discoveries that have been made by weighing commonly used farm implements, different tires and pressures and their impact on soil compaction using pressure sensors buried at varying depths in the soil. This is practical, cutting edge science offering practical solutions.
- Feb 23; Don Dum, machinery specialist with Brinkley and Hurst-Farm Equipment based in Pennsylvania, will review the components of a no-till planter and their proper adjustments. A question and answer period will follow, featuring local machinery experts.
- March 2; Janice Degni, Area Extension Field Crop Specialist moderates a panel of 3 dairy farmers from across NYS, who share the detail of their practices, including interseeding cover crops, cover crop mixes, tillage and crop rotation. The benefits that they have experienced include reduction in soil compaction and improved water infiltration and retention.
1 DEC pesticide recertification credit will be earned on February 9 in categories 1A and 21. CCA credits will be available for all sessions. There is a single $10 charge on February 16 for Compaction Reduction and Remediation. Pre-registration is required by February 7, 2021.
