EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. — Those of us in the potato industry know Minnesota grows a lot of potatoes ranking 7th in the nation but other table vegetables rank at or near the top.
In 2016 there were 103,800 total acres of sweet corn harvested in Minnesota with a total production of 14.3 million cwt. Fresh market production accounted for 321,000 cwt with a total value of $10.9 million. Production of sweet corn for processing totaled 700,685 tons and was valued at $55.4 million. Minnesota maintained its first place ranking for processing sweet corn production in 2016, with 28 percent of the nation’s total. U.S. sweet corn production totaled 73.9 million cwt.
Green pea production in Minnesota in 2016 totaled 1.91 million cwt from 46,300 harvested acres. Fresh market production totaled 3,000 cwt and was valued at $312,000. Processing production accounted for 95,250 tons of production and had a total value of $23.7 million. Minnesota was the second leading state for green pea production in the nation. Pea production in the U.S.
totaled 6.88 million cwt.
Five thousand acres of snap beans were harvested in Minnesota in 2016 for a total production of 366,000 cwt. Production was valued at $6.90 million.
Utilized production of pumpkins in 2016 totaled 157,000 cwt from 1,500 harvested acres. All pumpkins were for the fresh market and had a total value of $3.00 million.
