EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. — Potato production in Minnesota was 16.7 million hundredweight, up slightly from 16.2 million last year. Average yield jumped from 400 hundredweight per acre in 2015 to 430 in 2016. 40,000 acres were planted, only 1,000 acres were not harvested according to NASS.
Sugarbeet production is estimated at 12.5 million tons, up 3 percent from 2015. Yield averaged 30.0 tons per acre, up 2.0 tons from 2015. Sugarbeet production and yield are both the highest on record. The harvested acres at 417,000 are down 4 percent from 2015.
Corn for grain production in Minnesota during 2016 is estimated at 1.54 billion bushels, according to the USDA,National Agricultural Statistics Service Crop Production 2016 Summary report. The estimate is up 2 percent from the November 1 forecast and up 8 percent from 2015. Production is the highest on record. Minnesota’s corn for grain yield is estimated at 193 bushels per acre, 3 bushels more than the November 1 forecast and 5 bushels above the previous record yield set in 2015. Area harvested for grain is estimated at 8.00 million acres, unchanged from the November 1 forecast but 400,000 acres above 2015. Corn planted for all purposes in 2016 is estimated at 8.45 million acres, down 50,000 acres from the November 1 estimate but up 350,000 acres from 2015.
Soybean production is estimated at 394 million bushels in 2016, up slightly from the November 1 forecast and up 4 percent from 2015. Production is the highest on record. Minnesota soybean growers averaged 52.5 bushels per acre in 2016. This is up 0.5 bushel the November 1 forecast and up 2.5 bushels from the 2015 yield. The yield is the highest on record, topping 2015’s yield. The harvested acreage of 7.50 million is down 50,000 acres from both the November 1 estimate and 2015. Soybean planted acreage, at 7.55 million acres, is down 50,000 acres from 2015.
Oil Sunflower production is estimated at 96.0 million pounds, down 22 percent from 2015. Producers averaged 1,500 pounds per acre, down 9 percent from 2015. Oil sunflower harvested area is 64,000 acres.
Non-oil sunflower production is estimated at 17.6 million pounds, down 59 percent from 2015. The non-oil sunflower yield is estimated at 1,300 pounds per acre, down 28 percent from 2015. Area harvested for non-oil sunflowers is 13,500 acres.
