SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Hi, I’m Sydney Sleep and I am a farmer’s daughter and the summer intern for Ag United, Midwest Dairy, and SD Corn.
I grew up on a commercial Angus ranch outside of Spearfish, S.D. Growing up, I was very involved in the family ranch and loved to work alongside my dad, grandpa, and two siblings. When I was in high school, I often spent my summers raking hay, fixing fence, and checking cows. I also showed livestock and was involved in 4-H. All of these experiences played a part in forming my passion for the agriculture industry.
I learned countless lessons from the ranch that continue to be of value to me in many areas of life. I have learned the importance of patience and dedication. I have gained an understanding that things don’t always go as you hope for, but how you react is what truly matters. Most importantly, I have learned the value and reward of a strong work ethic.
As I got older, I found myself being an advocate for agriculture as many of my peers had false ideas about what really happens on the family farm and where their food comes from. It became a passion of mine to educate people about the agriculture industry. Because of this, I am now pursuing a degree in Agricultural Communications and a minor in Marketing at South Dakota State University where I will be a senior this fall.
Following graduation, I would love to have a job where I can share information with farmers and ranchers and also promote the agriculture industry to the public.
This summer, I am really looking forward to learning more about and promoting the many different agriculture industries in South Dakota. I am also excited to take part in numerous events across the state and to work with many producers and consumers.
I am so thankful for the opportunities the agriculture industry has given me. I am proud to be a farmer’s daughter and I wouldn’t want it any other way!
