HARRISBURG, Pa. — For the 2021 crop season, Pennsylvania growers are likely to plant a record amount of land with soybeans but will reduce the area devoted to corn. Growers across the State intend to plant an estimated record 640 thousand acres of soybeans in 2021, matching the previous record set in 2018 and last year, according to the Prospective Plantings report released today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). Corn planted area for all purposes in 2021 is estimated at 1.48 million acres, down 1% from last year.
The Prospective Plantings report provides the first official, survey based estimates of U.S. farmers’ 2021 planting intentions, according to King Whetstone, Director of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northeastern Regional Field Office. NASS acreage estimates are based on surveys conducted during the first two weeks of March from a sample of approximately 78,900 farm operators across the United States.
Other Pennsylvania’s 2021 key findings in the report are:
- Barley planted area is estimated at 39 thousand acres, down 13% from last year.
- Oat planted area is estimated at a record low 65 thousand acres, down 24% from last year.
- Winter Wheat area planted is estimated at 250 thousand acres, up 6% from last year.
- Hay area harvested is estimated at 1.35 million acres, down slightly from last year.
- Tobacco harvested area is estimated at 3,800 acres, down 31% from last year.
