STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Penn State Extension will be offering a statewide workshop series to small and backyard poultry flock owners on better management practices. These producers may include hobbyists, exhibition show people, or those interested in locally marketing eggs. The workshops will cover the same material at all locations and dates.
The workshops will cover poultry selection, best management practices, disease risks and biosecurity, housing design, egg production, broiler and turkey production, exhibition, and biosecurity plan development.
“The workshops are a great starting place for those interested in learning more about small and backyard poultry production,” said Emily Lhamon, Penn State Extension poultry educator. “Participants will come away with a better understanding of a flocks needs as well as responsibilities as an animal owner. Especially in the spring, poultry can be an impulsive purchase. We would like to provide a better educational foundation for people to feel confident in their decision to start raising small and backyard poultry flocks.”
Workshop locations include:
- March 27, 2020, at Schuylkill County Extension Office
- April 11, 2020, at York County 4-H Center
- April 17, 2020, at Huntingdon County Extension Office
- April 18, 2020, at Wayne County Extension Office
Each workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their respective locations. The cost of registration is $20. To learn more or register, visit extension.psu.edu/backyard-
