UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State’s Extension Dairy Team is hosting a series of workshops to help producers learn how successful calf and heifer management can enhance the profitability and sustainability of their operations.
In this Generation Next: Calf Workshop, the focus will be on important considerations for ensuring proper feeding and management of calves including feeding high quality feeds, formulating a proper diet, preventing disease and having a comprehensive management program. Particular emphasis will be given to proper navel care, colostrum management, calf health, calf housing and different liquid feeding options for calves.
Workshops will be offered on the following dates:
- Dec. 12, Scott Lackey, Sugar Branch Farms, 900 Besley Road, Columbia Cross Roads, Pa.
- Dec. 14 — Hoss’s Steak & Sea House, 1198 Wayne Ave., Indiana, Pa.
- Dec. 15 — Franklin County Ag Heritage Building, 185 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, Pa.
Each workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $25, with lunch included. Deadline for Columbia Cross Roads is Dec. 5; Indiana and Chambersburg, Dec. 8.
Presenters will be Jud Heinrichs, Professor of Dairy Science, and Cassie Yost, Extension Educator, Dairy. There will be both classroom discussion and hands-on farm demonstrations.
Generation Next: Calf Workshop is a series of workshops designed to educate dairy producers, farm managers and farm employees on calf management aspects for newborn calves through pre-fresh heifers.
