STURGEON BAY, Wis. โ Conservation practices, including cover crops and alternative forages, are shown to promote soil health and water quality. Innovations in forage and grain production systems are gaining interested and popularity across the state as farmers alter their crop rotations and planting strategies to include diverse forage cocktail and wider row spacings to accommodate in-season cover crops. But how do these practices work in the shorter growing season and variable soils of Wisconsin?
Join us on Thursday, August 5th, at Peninsular Ag Research Station, 4312 WI-42, Sturgeon Bay, to see these practices first-hand and hear from university, agency, and agronomic professionals on how to make alternative forages and interseeded cover crops successful in northern Wisconsin.
Starting at 10 am, Dr. Matt Akins, Extension Dairy Specialist, will discuss the establishment, production, and feeding of sorghum-sudan grass and alternative forage cocktail mixes to the dairy herd, while showcasing current alternative forage research plots. Preliminary results of a 2021 spring small grain production trial, including oats, spring barley, and spring triticale, will also be covered.
The WiscWeeds Team, led by Dr. Rodrigo Werle, Extension Cropping Systems Weed Scientist, will highlight local and statewide research on PRE-emergent herbicide impacts on interseeded cover crops in corn, effective strategies for waterhemp management, and the status of herbicide resistance in the state.
Barry Bubolz, NRCS Demonstration Farms Coordinator, and Jamie Patton, Outreach Specialist with the Nutrient and Pest Management Program, will lead discussion and tours of various cover crop interseeding mixes into 30โ, 60โ and twin 30โ corn.
The field plot tour, which runs from 10 am to 12 pm, is free and open to everyone. Light refreshments will be provided.
Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required at https://tinyurl.com/PARSTour. Questions can be directed to Jamie Patton with the Nutrient and Pest Management Program at jjpatton2@wisc.edu or 608-807-8530.
Field plot tours are sponsored by UW-Madison, Division of Extension, Nutrient and Pest Management Program, and the Door-Kewaunee Demonstration Farm Network.
