DECORAH, Iowa — Landowner Dale Nimrod will host a virtual field day with Practical Farmers of Iowa exploring ways to make land affordable for the next generation of farmers on Tuesday, July 14, from 4-5:30 p.m.
The event is free to attend and will take place on Zoom. To join in, visit practicalfarmers.org/field-days and click the link found on the page for this event.
Dale and his siblings, Faith Sherman and Vance Nimrod, sold their 240-acre farm in southwest Iowa to a local farm family at below market value in 2005 as a way to give back to the community that had supported his family and helped them farm after the untimely death of their father. In 2015, Dale and his siblings received Practical Farmers’ Farmland Owner Legacy Award to recognize their efforts.
Currently, Dale and his wife Sunny are working with Decorah-based lawyer Karl Knudson to transfer their own farm in northeast Iowa to their heirs in a manner that is equitable, affordable and farmable.
During the field day, Dale, Karl and Matt Roberts, a certified financial planner with Syverson Strege, will discuss farm transfer strategies with affordability for the next generation in mind.
Topics covered will include:
- How to value land at production versus market value
- Legal tools for facilitating farm transfer, including wills and sale contracts
- Tax implications of potential farm transfer strategies
This event is part of Practical Farmers’ 2020 field day season, which includes more than 60 virtual events hosted by farmers located across the state, and beyond, on topics spanning the agricultural spectrum.
New this year, we have planned several event series that will let participants check in with certain farmer hosts throughout the season to learn about different facets of farm management. All of these events are free and offered a la carte: guests are welcome to attend all events in the series or pick the ones they’re most interested in.
