EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State University Extension, North Carolina State University, Oregon State University and Washington State University are joining together to offer five live webinars on ornamental nursery and Christmas tree production topics. The Sustainable Christmas Tree and Nursery Production Webinars will be live 12:30 to 2 p.m. EST every Wednesday starting Jan. 31 through Feb. 28, 2018.

Participants will learn about:

  • Modes of action and performance attributes of insecticides commonly used in Christmas tree and nursery production, ways to improve efficacy of pesticide applications, using “softer” insecticides in your insect management program and ways to protect pollinators.
  • Soil factors that affect nutrient availability and nutrient use by conifers/plants. We will also discuss how to maximize benefits of fertilizer and keep nutrients in the root zone along with techniques for trouble-shooting nutrient problems.
  • Soil borne diseases that can be a limiting factor and may be difficult to control. There will be a review of the various soil pathogens and a discussion of management strategies. In addition, we will discuss nematodes that can attack the plant’s roots, stem and foliage.
  • Strategies for cost-effective weed management, selecting appropriate herbicides and timing of applications to obtain maximum weed control and avoid tree injury.
  • The most common causes of injury or dieback in conifers that are not due to diseases or insects and are often hard to diagnose.
  • Managing deer and other vertebrate pests.

The cost for the program is $40 for the entire webinar series or $15 per session. Two pesticide recertification credits per session will be offered for participants from Michigan.
