ST. PAUL — The MDA recently participated in the US Soybean Export Council’s (USSEC) Aquaculture Educational Opportunity event in Campeche, Mexico. The event featured USSEC team members from China, Southeast Asia, Turkey, Egypt and the Americas, who shared their efforts to promote the utilization of soy-based feeds in aquaculture.
The event included a tour of cutting-edge tilapia hatchery Central Acuícola, as well as a site visit to a tilapia farm in La Granja that featured the first In-Pond Raceway System in the Americas.
As the global demand for fish and seafood continues to grow – projected to expand to 100 million metric tons by 2025 – the demand for plant-based aquaculture feed will also grow. The use of fish meal and fish oil in aqua feed will likely fall due to sustainability and price pressures for feed suppliers and farms.
Diets among salmon grown in Norway and carp raised in China vary significantly. As advances in aquaculture nutrition continue, Minnesota farmers and feed manufacturers may find growing opportunities for soybeans, corn and wheat products.
