SYRACUSE, N.Y. — From animal shows to exhibiting cookies, Ontario County 4-H members participated in many events over the 13 days of the 2018 New York State Fair. For an explanation of the awards, a blue ribbon is first place, a red is second, a white is third and a green is for participation. In the 4-H Club project areas the following results were achieved:
Food and Nutrition: Natalie Santy-blue on chocolate chip cookies and Hannah Czadzeck- a red on her apple pie.
Fine Arts and Crafts: Gracie Nicol- a blue on her drawing, Mercie Nicol – a blue and a red on each of her drawings, Natalie Westerman a red on her painting, Shyla Luna received blue ribbons on her digital painting and on her turtle, chipmunk and owl pyrography exhibits. Also Lena Cooley received a blue ribbon on her recycling picture, Anna DeBoover a blue on her handspun yarn and Noah Czadzeck earning a blue ribbon on his knife sheath.
Hobby Crafts and Home Environment: Joseph Parshall receiving a blue ribbon on his indigo dyed dishcloth and Annika Parshall also getting a blue ribbon on her indigo dyed dishtowel. Blue ribbons were received by Olivia Maslyn and Grace Maslyn for their needle felting entries. Red ribbons were received by Jessica Rosini for her horse nail cowboy, Hope Weaver for her felt pillow, Bethtini Nelson-Hudgeon for her lotion exhibit and Annika Parshall for her woven rug. Megan Castano received a white ribbon for her recycled project and Jessica Rosini for her horseshoe boot rack.
Wearable Art: Hannah Czadzeck received a blue ribbon on her knitted hat while Annaleigh DeBoover earned blue ribbons on her knitting entries of socks, a hat and a cabled sweater. Annaleigh received a special recognition rosette for her cabled sweater entry.
Photography: Blue ribbons were received by Lillian Penird, Edward Goatseay and Shyla Luna for entries in the photography section. Receiving red ribbons for photography entries were Anna Penird, Natalie Westerman and Katie Penird. Shyla Luna received a special recognition for her flamingo photo entry and was also awarded Best of Show for the photo entry in the third time period at state fair.
Horticulture and Gardening: Container garden entries were completed by Braydon Polce, Alex Brockway and Zi’Hira Streeter. Each of them received a blue ribbon with Braydon Polce receiving a special recognition rosette for his herb garden. Shyla Luna brought home a blue ribbon for her plant topiary. Maddie Boisselle, Alex Brockway and Zi’Hira Streeter received blue ribbons for their garlic entries along with Isaiah Czadzeck being awarded a blue ribbon for his peppers. Maddie Boisselle also received a red on her onion entry. Red ribbons were received by Ezekiel Czadzeck for sunflowers, Hannah Czadzeck for zinnias and Luke Czadzeck for dahlias.
Environmental Education: Luke Czadzeck entered a taxidermy entry of a deerskin that received a blue while Isaiah Czadzeck received a red ribbon the snakeskin entry.
Science and Technology: A blue was awarded to Noah Czadzeck for the gun rack entry in woodworking.
Displayed Entries: Exhibits from Ontario County that were displayed for participation at the fair included: Manny Mand’s decorated sneakers, Graham Mauchly and Exra Hurd’s felt pillows and John Wassouf’s painted wooden owl.
Many 4-H members participated in contests and animal shows at the state fair this year. Results are as follows:
Dairy Challenge: In the novice division, Emma Jacobson was 3rd individual and Paige Jacobson was 6th individual and the Ontario County team placed 3rd in the Novice Division
Dairy Judging: Paige Jacobson placed 10th individual and Emma Jacobson was 11th individual in the novice division. The Novice team also placed 4th in the state event. Annaleigh DeBoover also participated in the senior division.
Poultry Science: Ontario County 4-H members received the top 4 placings in the Poultry Science area and will comprise the NYS Poultry Science team who will attend the National Poultry Science Conference and competition in Louisville in November. The participants in placing order are April Washburn, Mackenzie Lill, Mercie Nicol and Gracie Nicol.
Barbeque Contest: Wyatt Wadams placed 3rd in the Chicken Barbeque Cooking contest while Noah Czadzeck placed 4th. Mercie Nicol placed 1st in the Turkey Barbeque Cooking contest.
Livestock Skillathon: Participants for Ontario County included: Mackenzie Lill, Amberleigh Atwood, Wyatt Wadams and Mercie Nicol. Results were the Ontario County 4-H Senior Team placed 5th with Mackenzie Lill placing 6th individual. The combined Junior Team placed 1st with Wyatt Wadams placing 5th individual. Also helping with the team and contest were Annaleigh DeBoover and Scarlet Lamphier.
Livestock Judging: Annaleigh DeBoover placed 9th individual in Livestock Judging for 4-H at state fair.
Youth Poultry Show: Reserve Champion Large Fowl was awarded to Gracie Nicol while placing in the Poultry Senior Showmanship were Gracie Nicol, 2nd and Mercie Nicol placing 4th.
Sheep Show: Cameron Allison received awards for the Champion Ram and Reserve Champion Ram as well as the Champion Ewe and Reserve Champion Ewe in the Oxford Breed Show. In the Ramboulet Breed Show, Clay Allison showed the Champion Ram, Champion and Reserve Ewe and had the Champion Flock. For the Southdown Breed Show, Clay Allison showed the Champion Flock, the Champion Ram and the Reserve Champion Ram.
Beef Show: Izzy Raes placed 1st with her Late Summer Yearling and 3rd in Showmanship. Dylan Bozeman placed 1st with his Simmental Yearling Heifer. In the Other Breeds Class, Dylan Bozeman received a 1st with his Senior Yearling Heifer which was also the Reserve Supreme Champion. Dylan also placed 1st in the Senior Showmanship Class and was also named Master Showman. Corrine Brown entered her Crossbred Cow/Calf which was named the Champion Cow/Calf, Champion Prospect Calf and the Supreme Champion Cow/Calf entry.
Beef Show Showmanship: Dylan Bozeman was named Master Showman after placing 1st in the Senior Showmanship Class. Izzy Raes placed 3rd in Novice Showman and Corrine Brown placed 8th in Senior Showmanship.
Dairy Showmanship: The following placing results were received in the 4-H member age category during the first rotation of dairy exhibitors at state fair: Paige Jacobson-4th blue, Emma Jacobson-8th blue, Sayje Hinkle-11th blue, Cara Walker-5th red and Jaimee Frederick 9th red. In the second rotation Emily Button received 6th red and Cara Walker received a 2nd Blue Master Showman placing.
Rabbit Show: Avah Gladle was awarded the Best of Breed and Best Opposite with her French Lop entry.
Horse Show: Placings were as follows: Sweetheart Barrels; Pony, Abbie McKeegan 6th, Junior, Charlotte Rudat 1st place. Texas-T-Barrels; Junior, Morgan Cowan 5th. Quadrangle Barrels; Pony, Abbie McKeegan 3rd, Junior, Charlotte Rudat 1st. Straight Line Barrels; Pony, Abbie McKeegan 10th and Molli Spoor 1st place and in the junior division Charlotte Rudat placed 1st. In Pole Bending in Pony division Abbie McKeegan placed 8th and Molli Spoor placed 4th and in Junior Division Morgan Cowan placed 6th and Charlotte Rudat placed 9th. Cloverleaf results were Pony; Abbie McKeegan placed 8th while Molli Spoor was 3rd.
4-H Members also participated in leadership roles at the NYS Fair in the 4-H Youth Building areas. Working with activities with the fair going public were Annaleigh DeBoover, Elaina Harris- Maxwell and Cecelia Harris- Maxwell filled leadership roles as teen evaluators, working in the county booth activity zone and in the 4-H Shooting Sports area. Working in the 4-H Poultry area were Ontario County 4-H members, Mercie Nicol, Gracie Nicol, April Washburn, Annaleigh DeBoover, Wyatt Wadams and Mackenzie Lill. Adult volunteers also helping in the success of Ontario County at the fair included Mary Ann Whipple, Brenda DeBoover, Scarlet Lamphier and Danielle Washburn.
