NEW ALBANY, OHIO – The following statement was issued April 29 in response to President Trump’s Executive Order on Delegating Authority Under the Defense Protection Act with Respect to the Food Supply Chain Resources During the National Emergency Caused by COVID-19. The statement can be attributed to Cheryl Day, executive vice president, Ohio Pork Council:
“The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to the U.S. food and agriculture industry, and Ohio’s pig farmers are no exception to these challenges. The Ohio Pork Council applauds President Trump for his work to ensure that processors of pork, beef and poultry in the food supply chain will have the resources to continue operations to ensure an abundant supply of protein for Americans.
“We would be remiss to not mention the health and safety of the essential workers in America’s meat packing plants. Our thoughts go out to those adversely effected by COVID-19, and our hope is that President Trump’s leadership will provide the resources needed to ensure a safe and healthy work environment for food supply workers on the front line.
“While we understand the reasoning behind the previous closures of meat packing plants, they have caused severe disruptions in the food supply chain, ultimately effecting Ohio’s pig farmers. Everyone in the food supply chain – from farmers to packing plant workers – want to meet consumer demand for pork, and we are hopeful that President Trump’s Executive Order is a step in the right direction.”
