EAST LANSING, Mich. — Ohio winter wheat seeded area for 2021 is estimated at 500,000 acres, a decrease of 6 percent from last year, according to Cheryl Turner, State Statistician, USDA NASS, Ohio Field Office. A relatively dry fall helped winter wheat planting finish slightly ahead of the five-year average.
Winter wheat emergence lagged the five-year average early on, but moved ahead of schedule after timely rains at the end of October. The crop condition was rated 69 percent good to excellent as of November 29, compared with 52 percent during the same period last year.
U.S. winter wheat planted area for harvest in 2021 is estimated at 32.0 million acres, up 5 percent from 2020 and up 2 percent from 2019. This represents the fourth lowest United States acreage on record. Seeding of the 2021 acreage was underway in early-September and was ahead of the 5-year average pace. Throughout the season, planting and emergence progress remained ahead of the 5-year average pace. Seeding was mostly complete by November 15, 2020.
