ALBANY — The House passage of the 2018 Farm Bill cleared a major hurdle late yesterday that ultimately will benefit New York’s farmers. It contains improvements to risk management tools that farmers depend on to weather the unpredictability that comes with farming. It also funds a number of programs that assist with conservation efforts and rural economic development.
We greatly appreciate the support of the New York Representatives who voted in favor of the bill. It sets the stage for Senators to hopefully pass the Farm Bill as well in a timely manner, then lawmakers can begin the process to reach consensus on what will be in the final version.
We greatly encourage Senators Schumer and Gillibrand to support this important legislation. Farmers need stability in farm policy at a time when farm income has fallen 50% and big questions remain about the future of trade as well as immigration reform to fix the labor shortage in New York and across the country.
