SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Cindy Chan Phillips, RD, Director of Nutrition Education for the New York Beef Council was selected by the Central New York Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Educators (CNYAFCSE) as this year’s recipient of the Ellen Swallow Richards Award. The award was established to honor the founder of the Family and Consumer Sciences, Ellen Swallow Richards and is given to a non-FACS professional who has made an outstanding contribution and significant impact to the field of Family and Consumer Sciences education at the local and or New York State level.
Cindy is commended for her leadership in empowering students with educational programs and is admired for her passion and enthusiasm as a classroom guest speaker. Jean O’Toole Executive Director of the New York Beef Council stated, “We thank CNYAFCSE for the recognition and awarding of the “Ellen Swallow Richards Award”, their appreciation of Cindy’s efforts and achievements in educating and empowering students in Central New York, we are proud to have her as a member of our NYBC team.”
One key program that the NYBC offers to FACs classrooms throughout New York State is the Beef for the Classroom program which allows teachers to make beef purchases, encouraging the incorporation of beef nutrition and cookery into their teaching. Schools may be reimbursed up to $100 for beef purchases within reasonable limits related to class size and cut of beef purchased. The Beef for the Classroom program, and all NYBC nutrition programs, are funded by the Kansas and Nebraska Beef Councils.
