OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Northwest October Crop Production report was recently released by the National Agricultural Statistics Service Northwest Regional Field Office. The report gives production estimates for canola, corn, dry edible beans, sugarbeets, alfalfa hay and other hay. Production outlook is mixed depending on crop and state.
Canola
Washington canola production is forecast at 194 million pounds, up 36 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 88,000 acres, is up 15,000 acres from 2019. Yield is expected to be 2,200 pounds per acre, up 250 pounds from 2019.
Corn for Grain
Production of corn for grain in Idaho is forecast at 28.7 million bushels, down 7 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 140,000 acres, is down 10,000 acres from 2019. Yield is expected to be 205 bushels per acre, unchanged from 2019. Washington corn for grain production is forecast at 25.2 million bushels, up 18 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 105,000 acres, is up 15,000 acres from 2019. Yield is expected to be 240 bushels per acre, up 3.0 bushels from the previous year.
Dry Edible Beans
Idaho dry bean production is forecast at 1.67 million cwt., up 56 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 68,000 acres, is up 23,000 acres from 2019. Yield is expected to be 24.5 cwt per acre, up 0.8 cwt from 2019. Washington dry bean production is forecast at 1.04 million cwt, up 56 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 40,000 acres, is up 15,000 acres from 2019. Yield is expected to be 26.0 cwt per acre, down 0.6 cwt from 2019.
Sugarbeets
Production of sugarbeets in Idaho is forecast at 6.91 million tons, up 7 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 172,000 acres, is up 7,000 acres from 2019. Yield is expected to be 40.2 tons per acre, up 1.2 tons from 2019. Oregon sugarbeet production is forecast at 378,000 tons, up slightly from last year. Harvested area, at 9,400 acres, is down 400 acres from 2019. Yield is expected to be 40.2 tons per acre, up 1.7 tons from the previous year. Washington sugarbeet production is forecast at 90,000 tons, down 1 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 1,900 acres, is down 100 acres from 2019. Yield is expected to be 47.5 tons per acre, up 2.1 ton from 2019.
Alfalfa Hay
Based on October 1, 2020 conditions, production of alfalfa hay in Idaho is forecast at 4.44 million tons, unchanged from last year. Harvested area, at 1.01 million acres, is unchanged acres from 2019. Yield is expected to be 4.40 tons per acre, unchanged from 2019. Oregon alfalfa hay production is forecast at 1.78 million tons, down 6 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 370,000 acres, is down 30,000 acres from 2019. Yield is expected to be 4.80 tons per acre, up 0.1 ton from the previous year. Washington alfalfa hay production is forecast at 1.84 million tons, up 21 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 400,000 acres, is up 70,000 acres from 2019. Yield is expected to be 4.60 tons per acre, unchanged from the previous year.
All Other Hay
Production of other hay in Idaho is forecast at 754,000 tons, up 13 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 290,000 acres, is unchanged from 2019. Yield is expected to be 2.60 tons per acre, up 0.3 ton from 2019. Oregon other hay production is forecast at 1.56 million tons, up 5 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 600,000 acres, is up 30,000 acres from 2019. Yield is expected to be 2.60 tons per acre, unchanged from previous year. Washington other hay production is forecast at 840,000 tons, down 10 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 300,000 acres, is down 10,000 acres from 2019. Yield is expected to be 2.80 tons per acre, down 0.2 ton from the previous year.
