WASHINGTON D.C. — The Regulatory Accountability Act was introduced in the Senate last Wednesday with bipartisan support from Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND). This bill intends to enhance the process that allows regulations to be finalized, by increasing transparency and mandating a cost benefit analysis that is currently absent from federal rulemakings.
NPC signed a letter earlier in the year urging the Senate to introduce the legislation, as regulatory reform is a top priority for growers and other businesses that struggle against regulatory overreach. To support the case for an overhaul of the rulemaking process, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce issued a report about the number and type of regulations that have the greatest impact on the business community, consumers and ultimately the U.S. economy.
