RICHMOND, Va. — Corn production in Virginia is forecast at 56.6 million bushels, up 2% from the October forecast but down 2% from the previous crop. Yield was estimated at 164.0 bushels per acre, up 3.0 bushels from last month and up 4.0 bushels from the 2021 level. Acres for harvest as grain were estimated at 345,000 acres, down 15,000 acres from 2021. The U.S. corn production is forecast at 13.9 billion bushels, up slightly from the October forecast but down 8% from 2021. Based on conditions as of November 1, yields are expected to average 172.3 bushels per acre, up 0.4 bushels from last month but down 4.4 bushels from 2021. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 80.8 million acres, unchanged from the October forecast but down 5% from 2021.
Soybean production for Virginia is forecast at 26.2 million bushels, up 2% from the October forecast but down 3% from 2021. Yield was estimated at 43.0 bushels per acre, up 1.0 bushel from last month but down 3.0 bushels from a year ago. Acreage for harvest as beans was estimated at 610,000 acres, up 20,000 acres from the previous year. U.S. soybean production is forecast at 4.35 billion bushels, up 1% from the October forecast but down 3% from last year. Based on November 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 50.2 bushels per acre, up 0.4 bushels from last month but down 1.5 bushels from last year. Area for harvest is forecast at 86.6 million acres, unchanged from the October forecast but up slightly from 2021.
Virginia cotton production is projected to be 198,000 bales, up 1% from the October forecast and up 16% from last year. Cotton yields are forecast to average 1,068 pounds per acre, up 11 pounds from last month d but down 41 pounds per acre from the previous year. Producers expect to harvest 89,000 acres, unchanged from the October forecast but up 15,000 acres from 2021. U.S. cotton production was forecast at 14.0 million 480-pound bales, up 2% from the October forecast but down 20% from 2021. Yields are forecast to average 855 pounds per acre, up 13 pounds from last month and up 36 pounds from last year. Upland cotton production is forecast at 13.6 million 480-pound bales, down 21% from 2021. Pima cotton production is forecast at 470,000 480- pound bales, up 42% from 2021.
Peanut farmers in Virginia anticipate harvesting 132 million pounds for 2022, down 7% from last year. Acres expected to be harvested total 28,000 acres, down 2,000 from last year. Producers expect a yield of 4,700 pounds per acre, unchanged pounds from 2021. National peanut production is forecast to be 5.77 billion, down 9% from last year. Acres harvested are projected to total 1.41 million acres, down 8% from the previous year. Yields are anticipated to average 4,090 pounds per acre, down 40 pound per acre from 2021.
