MANDAN, N.D. — Dry conditions and warmer than normal temperatures allowed for significant planting progress in North Dakota last week. Spring wheat seeding is now estimated to be almost 80% complete in the state, up from less than 50% last week. Durum seeding is almost three-fourths complete. About 40% of the spring wheat and 25% of the durum has emerged. The vast majority of the remaining acreage should be planted in the next few days.
On a national basis, 85% of the spring wheat has been planted and 57% has emerged. Most of the acreage remaining to be planted is in Montana and North Dakota. Crop progress has now caught up to the five-year average. Durum in Montana is 78% planted with nearly half of it emerged.
With temperatures being 10-12 degrees above average and strong wind speeds last week, soil moisture dried out quickly. While this was conducive to planting progress, most producers are reporting that precipitation is needed soon to keep up the good crop conditions. Precipitation over the last week has been quite spotty. While some areas have received an inch or more, other areas have received little to no precipitation. Overall, producers are reporting that emerged crops look good with decent stands.
