North Dakota crop progress and conditions

Heat and drought affect crops as soil moisture rates predominantly in 'very short' classification

FARGO, N.D. — For the week ending June 6, 2021, there were 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 49% very short, 35% short, 14% adequate, and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 53% very short, 27% short, 20% adequate, and 0% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Soybean condition rated 9% very poor, 23% poor, 43% fair, 23% good, and 2% excellent. Soybeans planted was 95%, well ahead of 71% last year, and ahead of 87% for the five-year average. Emerged was 65%, well ahead of 29% last year, and ahead of 52% average.

Spring wheat condition rated 13% very poor, 16% poor, 39% fair, 30% good, and 2% excellent. Spring wheat emerged was 87%, ahead of 69% last year, and near 85% average. Jointed was 25%, ahead of 8% last year, and near 21% average.

Durum wheat condition rated 4% very poor, 11% poor, 33% fair, 41% good, and 11% excellent. Durum wheat planted was 97%, near 96% last year. Emerged was 65%, behind 73% last year and 77% average. Jointed was 13%, ahead of 6% last year, but near 17% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 12% very poor, 33% poor, 33% fair, 21% good, and 1% excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 85%, ahead of 77% last year and 79% average. Headed was 14%, near 12% last year and 16% average.

Corn condition rated 5% very poor, 12% poor, 41% fair, 39% good, and 3% excellent. Corn planted was 97%, ahead of 85% last year, and near 94% average. Emerged was 73%, well ahead of 48% last year, and near 70% average.

Canola planted was 96%, ahead of 89% last year. Emerged was 52%, equal to last year, and well behind 73% average.

Oats condition rated 8% very poor, 17% poor, 51% fair, 23% good, and 1% excellent. Oats emerged was 85%, well ahead of 62% last year, and ahead of 77% average. Jointed was 30%, ahead of 12% last year, and near 26% average.

Barley condition rated 11% very poor, 20% poor, 47% fair, 20% good, and 2% excellent. Barley emerged was 86%, ahead of 67% last year, and near 84% average. Jointed was 22%, ahead of 8% last year, but near 24% average.

Dry edible peas condition rated 7% very poor, 16% poor, 41% fair, 34% good, and 2% excellent. Dry edible peas planted was 97%, near 93% last year and 96% average. Emerged was 70%, behind 76% last year and 80% average.

Sunflowers planted was 72%, ahead of 57% last year, and equal to average. Emerged was 27%, ahead of 16% last year, but near 28% average.

Flaxseed planted was 95%, ahead of 88% last year, and near 91% average. Emerged was 50%, ahead of 44% last year, but behind 57% average.

Potato condition rated 5% very poor, 13% poor, 60% fair, 20% good, and 2% excellent. Potatoes emerged was 83%, well ahead of 20% last year and 43% average.

Dry edible beans planted was 92%, well ahead of 68% last year, and ahead of 84% average. Emerged was 52%, well ahead of 21% last year, and ahead of 40% average.

Alfalfa condition rated 24% very poor, 30% poor, 28% fair, 18% good, and 0% excellent. Alfalfa first cutting was 4%, near 1% last year, and equal to average.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 44% very poor, 23% poor, 25% fair, 8% good, and 0% excellent.

Stock water supplies rated 42% very short, 32% short, 26% adequate, and 0% surplus.
