FARGO, N.D. — For the week ending April 18, 2021, there were 2.7 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Reports indicated that, on average, producers began fieldwork on April 16th. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 50% very short, 28% short, 21% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 50% very short, 27% short, 22% adequate, and 1% surplus.
Field Crops Report: Spring wheat planted was 13%, ahead of 5% for the five-year average. Emerged was 1%.
Durum wheat planted was 7%.
Winter wheat condition rated 16% very poor, 37% poor, 39% fair, 7% good, and 1% excellent.
Winter wheat jointed was 10%.
Corn planted was 3%.
Sugarbeets planted was 8%, near 9% average.
Oats planted was 4%, equal to average.
Barley planted was 8%, ahead of 3% average.
Dry edible peas planted was 3%.
Potatoes planted was 2%.
Pasture and Range Report: Cattle and calf conditions rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 18% fair, 56% good, and 19% excellent. Cattle and calf death loss rated 2% heavy, 45% average, and 53% light. Calving progress was 67% complete, ahead of 55% last year and 61% average.
Sheep and lamb conditions rated 0% very poor, 3% poor, 14% fair, 64% good, and 19% excellent. Sheep and lamb death loss rated 1% heavy, 46% average, and 53% light. Lambing progress was 82% complete, ahead of 74% last year and 75% average. Shearing progress was 88% complete, near 85% last year.
Hay and roughage supplies rated 17% very short, 32% short, 45% adequate, and 6% surplus.
Stock water supplies rated 32% very short, 32% short, 36% adequate, and 0% surplus.
