BISMARCK, N.D. — The North Dakota Beef Commission (NDBC) is celebrating “May is Beef Month” in North Dakota, recognizing the beef industry’s vital contribution to the state’s economy and beef’s role in providing essential nutrients to consumers.

North Dakota produces more than 822 million pounds of beef annually and contributes annual cash receipts from beef cattle sales totaling $2.575 billion. Beef Month also recognizes the dedication of North Dakota’s beef producers to raising high-quality, wholesome and nutritious beef that feeds the world.

“Recognizing May as Beef Month is not only important in promoting beef as a product, but it also lets people know how proud the producers are of their product. They want consumers to recognize the care and effort put into the production and quality of beef, and recognize its high nutritional value,” says NDBC board member Matt Lachenmeier of Mandan.

A variety of promotions and activities are taking place to celebrate Beef Month. Select Cash Wise Foods stores across the state are holding Beef Month promotions to supply consumers with beef and other summer grilling ingredients, and the NDBC is posting social media content filled with grilling tips and recipes. In addition, the North Dakota CattleWomen are hosting a virtual 5K run, and consumers can also participate in the North Dakota State University Instant Pot virtual class to learn new ways to enjoy beef.

Highlighting May as Beef Month also helps producers and consumers launch into the summer grilling season. “Beef Month promotions will remind consumers to have beef for their next gathering or start trying new beef recipes. It will raise awareness and increase demand for beef as the summer begins.” Lachenmeier says.

The NDBC, representing North Dakota beef producers, manages the state beef checkoff program with the mission of enhancing beef demand by strengthening consumer trust and exceeding consumer expectations. This is accomplished through programs and activities in the areas of promotion, research and consumer information. For additional information on Beef Month activities and the NDBC, visit ndbeef.org.
