OSAGE CITY, Kan. — Farmers and professionals interested in companion cropping and soil health practices are invited to see one of Kansas’ best at a field day this summer on August 29th. No-till on the Plains in partnership with the North Central Region of SARE, are hosting a field day at Thompson Farms, near Osage City Participants will meet in the morning at the Osage City community center 307 S 1st St, Osage City, KS 66523. The workshop is free and lunch is included for those that pre-register at www.notill.org.
Through a grant from NC SARE, four producers across Kansas have planted demonstration plots of sorghum grown with six companion species. The additional species were chosen to assist in weed suppression and attracting beneficial insect species. The fifteen acre plots are seeded adjacent to sorghum without the companion crops for comparison. Soil moisture through the profile is being monitored inside and outside the plot to estimate differences in water use.
The day begins with an 8 a.m. registration and by 8:30 a.m. attendees will head to the demonstration plot and other area fields. Lunch is provided.
No-till on the Plains Annual Sponsors: Green Cover Seed, Farmers Business Network, and General Mills.
