LENA, Wis. — The Marinette and Oconto County offices of UW-Madison, Division of Extension are offering a workshop to help producers plan their nitrogen management strategies for the 2020 production season. The event is being held at the Lena Town Hall (6087 Goatsville Road, at the intersection of Goatsville and Jagiello Roads – northwest of the Village of Lena) on Tuesday, March 3rd, with registration beginning at 10 a.m. and all programs complete by about 2:30 p.m.
There are two main topics on the day’s agenda: Understanding the Nitrogen Cycle and Achieving Optimum Economic Return to Nitrogen Inputs. The morning discussion will focus on nitrogen in groundwater and the nitrogen cycle. Scott Reuss, Crops/Soils Extension Agent for the two counties, will relay current groundwater nitrate test data and share the geological features which impact nitrate risk. Then, Jamie Patton, NE Regional Specialist with the UW Nutrient & Pest Management Program, will focus on the nitrogen cycle in topsoil and how our nitrogen additions act within that cycle.
After lunch, discussion focuses on proper nitrogen addition management and how to achieve optimum economic returns to those additions. Key concepts that will be included during this portion include: Crediting on-farm nitrogen sources and timing sensitivity of N availability from them. Nitrogen fertilizer, additives, and inhibitors – how do they work, what are their true costs, and which ones will likely allow us to achieve our nitrogen management goals most completely? The MRTN (Maximum return to nitrogen) approach to managing nitrogen and how it should affect your farm’s nitrogen management strategy. Local nitrogen rate trial results that were conducted in 2019 will also be presented, as part of the ending discussion of putting the day’s information together into a set of nitrogen rate management recommendations for 2020.
There will be a $10 per-person registration fee, including lunch and all handouts, for this event. Anyone wishing to attend is asked to contact Scott Reuss to pre-register, primarily to make certain that lunch and materials are available for all attendees.
