NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. — The school districts in the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES Food Service program as well as Whitesboro, Holland Patent and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill will participate in a New York Food Day on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, a partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County. All of the buildings in 17 school districts, plus the OHM BOCES, will be serving a menu featuring locally grown, processed and produced items.
The proposed menu includes:
Local beef meatball subs, locally harvested and processed green beans, local apples, New York state milk and yogurt.
“We have put together New York Food Days in the past to help showcase the amazing foods that are grown, made and produced right here in the Mohawk Valley,” said Kate Dorr, OHM BOCES assistant school lunch director and registered dietitian nutritionist. “But this is the first time we have truly followed the food system from farm to fork. We have worked closely with Cornell Cooperative Extension to start looking at local dairy and produce farms and follow the product from there to the processor, to the food manufacturer, and finally to our school kitchens through a distributor.”
“We hope for this event to show area parents, administrators, legislators, and farmers that their friends and neighbors are working to improve the health and future of our children,” said Jake Perrin Cornell Cooperative Extension Farm to School market development specialist. “Cooperation with partners has been essential to this event. Farm to School is the work of communities that understand school lunch could be an education in healthy eating that contributes to the local agricultural economy. We need interested parties to join us to build lasting partnerships and programs. Reach out to Cornell Cooperative Extension if you or your business would like to get
involved.”
Partnering farms and businesses include: Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County, VVS FFA, Roma Sausage, Humphreys Farm Inc., Mosher Farms, Curtin Dairy, Seneca Foods, North Star Orchard, Old McMarley’s Apple Farm, Purdy and Sons Foods, New York Custom Processing, Chobani, Smith Packing, Carlo Masi Sons and Daughter, Byrne Dairy, New York Bakery and Bimbo Bakery.
