DURHAM, N.H. — The University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension has launched a new podcast for New Hampshire gardeners. The Granite State Gardening podcast can be heard on the UNH Extension website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts and other podcast apps, free of charge. The podcast has been released with three episodes and new episodes will air every two weeks. These first three episodes focus on the New Hampshire victory garden movement in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, growing fruit indoors and growing herbs indoors. The fourth episode will focus on choosing seed varieties and garden planning with special guest Becky Sideman, Ph.D., UNH professor and sustainable horticulture specialist with UNH Extension and the NH Agricultural Experiment Station. Other upcoming episodes will focus on emerald ash borer, foliage houseplants, seed starting, pruning, and much more.Granite State Gardening is co-hosted by Emma Erler and Nate Bernitz. Episodes average about an hour in length and are ad-free. Regular segments of the podcast include a featured plant, a featured audience question, an integrated pest management tip from Rachel Maccini (pesticide safety education program coordinator for UNH Extension) and a take-away gardening recommendation.
About the Hosts
Emma Erler joined UNH Extension as the Education Center program coordinator in 2017 and is moving into a new role as field specialist in Hillsborough County. Her expertise is in landscape horticulture and provides research-based programming and technical assistance to green-industry businesses throughout the state, including nursery, garden center, and landscape operations. Erler shares her expertise regularly on WMUR’s Grow it Green gardening feature and through her weekly gardening column, as well as through workshops, courses, and new programs.
Nate Bernitz is the home horticulture outreach program manager for UNH Extension where he works with and supports Master Gardener volunteers to answer home, yard and garden questions from the public. As a co-host, Nate fills the role of the eager-to-learn gardener, ensuring information is accessible to gardeners of varying experience levels. Nate is an experienced interviewer and helps bring guest’s expertise to life.
According to Emma Erler, “Interest in gardening has grown noticeably over the past year, from brand new gardeners to experienced gardeners picking up the hobby again, and demand for UNH Extension’s expertise and unbiased recommendations has increased too.”
Nate Bernitz is excited to bring this topic to listeners. “Gardening is something anybody can do and, given its popularity, we were surprised that not only is gardening an under-represented topic of podcasts, but there wasn’t any podcast geared towards gardeners in the Northeast,” he said.
“Interest in gardening comes along with a lot of contradictory and often non-science-based information, so we meet an important need as a source of information tailored to northern New England that gardeners can rely on.”
