TRENTON, N.J. — The number of farms in New Jersey for 2020 is estimated at 9,900, unchanged from 2019, according to Bruce Eklund, state statistician of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Jersey Field Office. Total land in farms, at 750,000 acres, was unchanged from 2019. The average farm size for 2020 is 76 acres.
Farm numbers and land in farms are differentiated by six economic sales classes. Farms and ranches are classified into these six sales classes by summing the sales of agricultural products and government program payments. Sales class breaks occur at $10,000, $100,000, $250,000, $500,000, and $1,000,000.

- Sales Class $1,000 – $9,999 at 6,400 farms.
- Sales Class $10,000 – $99,999 at 2,350 farms.
- Sales Class $100,000 – $249,999 at 450 farms.
- Sales Class $250,000 – $499,999 at 280 farms
- Sales Class $500,000 – $999,999 at 200 farms
- Sales Class $1,000,000 or more at 220 farms
Farmland by sales class are:
- Sales Class $1,000 – $9,999 at 160 thousand acres
- Sales Class $10,000 – $99,999 at 170 thousand acres
- Sales Class $100,000 – $249,999 at 110 thousand acres
- Sales Class $250,000 – $499,999 at 80 thousand acres
- Sales Class $500,000 – $999,999 at 90 thousand acres
- Sales Class $1,000,000 or more at 140 thousand acres
Average sizes of farms by sales class are:
- Sales Class $1,000 – $9,999: 25 acres.
- Sales Class $10,000 – $99,999: 72 acres
- Sales Class $100,000 – $249,999: 244 acres
- Sales Class $250,000 – $499,999: 286 acres
- Sales Class $500,000 – $999,999: 450 acres
- Sales Class $1,000,000 or more: 636 acres
