BAIRD, Texas — The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service has named Karl Winge the new agriculture and natural resources agent for Callahan County effective Feb. 1.

The announcement was made by Callahan County Judge Roger Corn and Marty Gibbs, AgriLife Extension administrator for the agency’s West Central District headquartered in San Angelo.

“We are very pleased to have Karl become part of our 23-county AgriLife Extension team,” Gibbs said. “He brings to the position a wealth of practical agricultural and academic knowledge as well as a working relationship with the 4-H youth development program. He’s very familiar with the county and with its brand of agriculture. I see this as being a seamless and positive appointment from both the adult and youth components, which are of equal importance in this particular position.”

Winge earned a bachelor’s degree in horticulture and landscape management from Tarleton State University at Stephenville in 2002 and also holds an associate degree of science in general agriculture from Cisco Junior College.

Winge was raised on a peanut farm south of Cisco and grew up being involved in the 4-H program. He has served as a 4-H club manager, president of the Eastland County adult 4-H leaders association and has been an Eastland County youth wool and mohair judging team coach. He also has been a board member of Eastland County Livestock Raisers and a trainer for first- and third-year officials for the Abilene Basketball Chapter.

His past work experience includes managing and later owning and operating turf grass firms in Clyde, assistant superintendent at Diamondback Golf Club in Abilene and second assistant superintendent at Abilene Country Club.

Winge fills the position formerly held by Jerry Warren who retired Aug. 31after 19 years with the agency.
