INDIANAPOLIS — Two Indiana teens took top 10 honors at the 2020 National Make It with Wool (MIWW) competition in Scottsdale, Ariz., in conjunction with the American Sheep Industry annual convention.
Madeline Douglas of Flat Rock, Ind., placed first in the junior division (ages 13-16), and Olivia Lexie South of Marshall, Ind., placed in the top 10 in the senior division (ages 17-24).
In addition, Madeline Douglas was awarded a specialty first place honor for “outstanding use of mohair” for the charcoal gray mohair coat she sewed for the competition. As first place national junior winner, Madeline will be representing the MIWW as the contest’s junior ambassador through 2020.
Forty-six contestants representing 26 states spent three days participating in judging workshops, fashion show rehearsals and learning more about the sheep and wool industry. The competition showcases and promotes the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics, yarns, and fibers and encourages personal creativity in sewing, knitting, crocheting, spinning, weaving, and other needlework arts. All contestants must select, construct, and model their own garment(s) made from more than 60 percent wool
The National MIWW contest is sponsored by ASI and ASI-Women. Contestants sew, felt, knit, or crochet garments made with wool fabric or yarn (of at least 60% wool content). Junior and Senior winners of State Contests are invited to compete at the national level. Other age and category divisions are offered on a state level. The national adult and design judging competitions are held prior to the National MIWW Competition.
