PAW PAW, Mich. — Southwest Michigan is blessed with a wonderful diversity of lakes, forest and farmland across the region. However, keeping forest and woodlots both productive and healthy requires making good management decisions. Increasingly, it is important to have a good understanding of undesirable species, pests and diseases that can impact the value of these landscapes for timber production, wildlife and to maintain the natural diversity of the native species that have grown here for countless generations.
MSUE is pleased to sponsor this program to help woodlot and forest land owners learn more about ways to improve management of their properties. Production topics that will be covered include management and selection of tree species, thinning, types of timber sales, developing a forest management plan, working with consulting foresters. Business topics that will be discussed by MSU professor emeritus Dr. Karen Potter-Witter include Income Tax considerations for tree sales, establishing basis, and considerations for participating in Michigan’s Qualified Forest Property Tax Program. The session will also cover how to identify and manage the many invasive species of plants, insects and diseases that either are in southwest Michigan or are expected to be found here in the near future. Speakers from MSU, the Van Buren Conservation District, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the industry will be presenting.
This program will be held concurrently with the Ag Action Day Program at the Texas Township (Main Osthemo Campus) at KVCC on Friday, January 25, 2019. The program runs from 9:00 am until 3:30 pm, with lunch included. The registration fee is $30 per person, which includes the lunch, and handouts. For more information on this program contact the Van Buren MSU Extension Office at 269-657-8213.
We hope that you will join us to learn more about ways improve and protect your forests in these times of unprecedented challenges.
