FORT COLLINS, Colo. — MPTI has been doing third party quality assessments on boar semen for several years and is pleased to announce their new services in bull semen. The company has seen some tremendous variation in semen quality and post-thaw (even between freeze codes of the same bull). This new service is available to both bull owners and breeders. It enables an understanding of the true quality of a bull’s sample to help improve pregnancy rates. As much beef semen is packaged in small studs, they are not often equipped with instrumentation to provide an in-depth look at sperm quality beyond visual assessment of motility and morphology. MPTI takes an in-depth look at the sperm functionality and physiological status.
It’s well known that optimal fertility is an equation with two parts (male and female). Historically, however, it seems the male portion of the equation does not get sufficient attention, especially in the beef cattle realm. MPTI seeks to change this paradigm.
“The goal of the BSE is really to identify sub-fertile bulls. It doesn’t really help us in identifying more fertile bulls. It is also a pass/fail exam and if we’re going to make any improvement through selection, we’re not going to make it with a pass/fail exam. And you only need 30% to pass.” -Dr. Tom Geary : USDA-ARS
The new service also offers an expansion on the traditional breeding soundness exams (BSE). The current BSE is an assessment of preliminary breeding quality, but MPTI believes it could be more informative by building on the veterinarian’s assessment. MPTI can help provide a ranking of bulls by fertility potential using our comprehensive semen analysis and enables producers to secure extra value from the highest ranked bulls.
Using this service, bovine genetic centers will be able to provide clients with reports that provide valuable insight into fertility issues that might otherwise be unobserved. An individual bull owner or semen purchaser can also take advantage of this service, enabling them to make informed decisions about how to utilize the sperm and sell or buy a more reproductively vetted product.
It only takes a couple straws of frozen semen, and short amount of time. Interested parties can simply call MPTI and they will be given instruction as to how and where to ship the sample straws.
